April News and Events
We have had a busy start to 2008 – over the winter and spring we’ve enjoyed hosting many school visits here at Highfield and we have also made outreach visits with our new mobile bakery . Recently we had fun helping Devon Wildlife Trust launch their new HQ at Cricklepit Mill, Exeter. I have been particularly interested in the restoration of the mill since my late father (George Shears) was the last private owner and miller at Cricklepit. I am sure he would have been thrilled to see what a fantastic job millwright Martin Watts and DWT have done in restoring the mill to good working condition, whilst at the same time creating state of the art office facilities for 60 staff. On the opening day we supplied organic wheat for the mill and families made their own bread rolls with the flour that was produced.
We have a full and varied programme of activities and events booked for the mobile oven for the rest of 2008, please come and visit us at any one of them – depending on the event we may be making bread rolls or pizzas
05/05/08 North Somerset Show – mobile bakery forming part of “Wheel of Agriculture” educational exhibit – demonstrating to the public where and how food is produced by farmers.
15,16,17/05/08 Devon County Show – mobile bakery forms part of “Year of Food and Farming Trail” – 3500 children booked to do trail and bake with the mobile oven over the three days !
31/05/08 The Royal Bath and West Show – our mobile wood fired bakery will be on the Country Landowners Association stand.
28-29/06/08 Bridport Food Festival
07/08/08 Honiton Show – childrens hands on Farming Fun baking at East Devon AONB stand.
09/09/08 Widecombe Fair – Dartmoor – Year of Food and Farming displays for children of Widecombe primary school and public.
On the farm itself we have been very busy with Higher Stewardship. We’ve put up over 25 nest boxes for birds, bats and Dormice. Our ten acres of Spring Barley (which helps to sustain farmland birds over the hard winter months) has been sown in good conditions, and now we are preparing plots of land for establishment of bird seed crops including Millet, Kale and Quinoa.
Hope to see you over the summer !!
Cheers for now,
